From this simple story, fifty-fifty in this condensed version, I took away a lot of adult themes in costume of the simple hijinks of some woods animals.

I chose to read it after it was gifted to my girl, and I needed something light and happy to read between all my usual disturbing novels. Turns out, The Wind in the Willows was right up my aisle in those terms! 🤣
From this simple story, even in this condensed version, I took abroad a lot of adult themes in costume of the simple hijinks of some forest animals.
Firstly, and nigh obvious, is homosexuality. I mean, Mole and Rat were definitely getting it in, permit'south be honest. I think all iv main characters (male, unmarried, alive alone or move in and out with each other frequently, lots of food and sleepovers) showroom characteristics of the modern gay man. The characters intendance so deeply about 1 another, championing each other even when they telephone call Bullshit. They dearest each other, like more than friendses. Because this story was written in early 1900s, Homosexuality was a taboo subject, but because they're cute animals instead of adult men, it flew under the radar. That's my own estimation, with love.
The way the friends subdue Toad's ceaseless "demand" to drive motorcars- isolating him at home for a few days while he "crashes" and "gets all of that out of his system" seems a direct reference to drug employ and interventions. Lol, call me crazy.
Also, there are many undertones of depression and mental wellness issues throughout. Most notably, when Rat speaks to the traveler & birds nigh heading southward. He wishes his life was better. He impulsively tidies & packs his things, intending to leave for "the South" until Mole tearfully begs him to stay, even to the point of physically restraining Rat while he cries and cries until he falls asleep. Once Rat wakes upward, Mole tin encounter that he's more of himself again and he sits and talks with Rat until he realizes that he actually loves his life where he is...
If that wasn't a metaphor for a depressive episode with an interrupted suicide attempt, Idk what is.
Like I said, I could be trying too hard to pull strings hither and there, simply I think this piece of archetype children'southward literature is a much deeper, or darker, story than first meets the eye. ...more

Grapheme:
Mole: A small burrowing mammal with night velvety fur, a long muzzle, and very small eyes, feeding mainly on worms, grubs, and other invertebrates.
Water rat: A large semiaquatic rat-like rodent. As well the water rat was very good at pond.
This book is well-nigh one twenty-four hour period, when mole: a peace-loving picayune animate being, cleans his house, he saw a water rat set opposite to him and brand lots of food: cake, pie, and beef. Mole was constitute water rat and play with him. One day the mole and water rat went to the picnic, they roared a boat, but mole can't swim as well can't road the boat, then the gunkhole was falling over, including this things, mole and h2o rat made a good couple, lots of things will happen to they. Subsequently the story, they made some new friends witch were toads and weasels. They e'er aid each other to run over whatever difficult happen or things.
This book is a wonderful adventure book!! I would recommend it to anyone!! Especially if yous like toads and rats or weasels and moles, I establish more interesting, happy, community and brave in this book, I understand the principle from this book was friendship was very of import, and you demand have brave to do anything, courageous and try doing somethings you lot think you lot tin't practise, breakthrough yourself. I hope you can read this interesting book-Current of air in the willows.

Mayhap if I had picked upwardly an abridged copy we would have enjoyed it more than. Read this one out loud to my girl a few years ago. What I think most about it is being bored. It seems like we just slogged through it (nosotros rarely quit reading in the middle). I know it's supposed to be a bully children's archetype, but I call back Disney found the two interesting parts & ran with it.
Perhaps if I had picked upward an abridged copy we would have enjoyed information technology more. ...more
